BELVIDE 31.12.24

News received today included the Lesser Scaup off the dam, also a drake Mandarin and single Shelduck. 2 Great Egret were new arrivals. A Goshawk and Peregrine were in the area.

It's been another fantastic year with a total of 175 species recorded on the reserve. The outstanding highlight being the American Golden Plover during late May/early June, that was a new bird for the reserve and Staffordshire. Other highlights included the first Bearded Tits for 39 years in November. A stunning Slavonian Grebe in April and a Common Crane in early May. A Honey Buzzard over in June, 'Lenny' our drake Lesser Scaup took up residency from the middle of August. A Pectoral Sandpiper and 2 Roseate Tern in September, Bittern in November and a Great Northern Diver in December.

I managed to see a total of 170 species, with 321 visits made, missing Crossbill, Avocet, Sandwich Tern, Quail and Honey Buzzard.

Thanks to all of you who have shared with me these great birds and memories and to those of you who have turned out to the work parties to make Belvide a better place.

BELVIDE 29.12.24 Cloudy WSW 1

At around 10.45am I picked up what looked like a Rough Legged Buzzard flying away from me over the stubble fields beyond the west Marsh. The white tail with a broad black tail band could clearly be seen. The bird then banked to show a black lower belly patch. The wings appeared longer and flight was on deeper slower wing beats. Due to the brevity of the sighting, which was no more than 15 seconds and the fact there have been very few records this winter, I have had some doubts. I have encountered many Buzzards over the years with whiteish tails, but have always confidently dismissed such birds. This bird certainly got me excited. I really hope it gets seen again. The only other record for Belvide, was a juvenile male found dead in the reservoir plantation, as a result of poisoning on the 31st March 1979.

The Lesser Scaup remains off the dam, also 9 Pintail (8 drakes) were present early morning only. 4 Stonechat including 3 male were off the west track.

BELVIDE 27.12.24

News received today included the Lesser Scaup and a Little Egret.

I had a day out to see a Yellow Warbler at New Hythe in Kent, that was found on Christmas Eve. It had been 20 years since the last one I saw on Barra. We arrived mid morning and had to wait a couple of hours for the bird to show in a group of Alder trees. It showed for about 5 minutes before disappearing again. It then showed very well around 2.15pm. A difficult bird to digiscope, though I did manage some record shots. This becomes the 11th record for Britain and only the 2nd mainland record. There was also a Firecrest and several Chiffchaff in the area.
